Mom out on $10,000 bond after newborn girl tossed in dumpster, Horry County Police say

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) – According to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center website, 23-year-old Shelby Taylor, posted bond around 6:00 Saturday night.

Taylor is charged with one count of attempted murder in the case of her newborn baby that police say she left in a dumpster on Thursday.

Lieutenant Raul Denis says Taylor turned herself in Thursday night after she saw a surveillance picture of herself on TV. When police interviewed her they found out she had complications from giving birth and took her to a hospital where she stayed until Saturday morning.

Once she was released from the hospital, police booked her at the County Detention Center on one count of attempted murder. In a bond hearing that took place Saturday afternoon, a judge set her bond at $10,000 with the stipulation she stay away from any minors including her own children unless she has permission from D.S.S.

Taylor has a 15-month-old child in addition to the girl she gave birth to on Thursday.

The judge did not require any type of GPS monitoring as requested by the Solicitor’s office.

Taylor’s attorney Greg McCollum would not answer any questions after her court appearance as to whether or not Taylor committed the crime.”What I’m saying right now is that she is presumed innocent. The process has just started. We understand that people are concerned about it and rightly so. It’s premature for us to comment beyond that,” McCollum said.

Taylor will appear in court again on June 19th. D.S.S. is working with local law enforcement and the family to determine placement for the baby.
