Missing elderly NC woman found dead in Tennessee

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – Remains were found in the Cherokee National Forest in Monroe County that have been positively identified as a missing woman from North Carolina.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons had issued a Silver Alert for Eunice Gass, 81, from Jackson County, North Carolina. She was believed to be suffering from dementia or another type of cognitive impairment.

During the night of Oct. 22, her vehicle was located in the Cherokee National Forest, just inside Monroe County. The next two days, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and a number of other agencies searched the area and found human remains. The remains were sent to the Knox County Forensic Center where they were positively identified as those of Gass.

Investigators do not suspect foul play in the case.
