Miss Myrtle Beach 2019 Eliza Moore joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Tuesday to talk about her passion for the arts and the important role it can play in people’s lives – especially the lives on young people.

-What is the Hope for the Arts Scholarship?
A:This scholarship is something awarded to a child (or hopefully multiple children this year) who are at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing an education in the arts. I do fundraising events throughout the year in hopes of providing a way for a child to pursue his or her dream. Last year I gave away a $1000 scholarship to a young dancer at the Academy of Dance and Fine Arts! This year my goal is $3000.
-What inspired you to create “Hope for the Arts?”
A: Growing up, dancing was always such a huge part of my life and something that shaped me into who I am today through both trials and success It was my junior year in high school, that I began to see the negative feedback that can come with pursuing a career in the arts rather than just a side passion or hobby. I had to overcome several obstacles to obtain my goal of going to college to study dance. No way was I going to just give it up and major in something “safer.” Art is incredibly fundamental to child development and should be a part of all children’s lives- but it shouldn’t stop there. If a child has a passion and a gift in the arts and they want to reach a professional level, they should be encouraged to do so. A career in the arts deserves the same respect as any other field. Hope for the Arts is my commitment to stand behind, guide and support those who feel as passionately as I do about a career in the arts. It says that I am a firm believer of those statements and my life and choices in my career and everyday life will always reflect that.
-What drew you to the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization?
A: The main draw for me was the opportunity to shine a light on an issue that I personally stand for. I have always felt a strong call to raise awareness for the importance for arts but needed direction in how to spread this message to my community- this is exactly what the Miss SC Competition gives me. In addition to this, the scholarship opportunity is incredible. I received a talent award last year and to be honored for something that I love to do was an incredible feeling. Also, the winner of the Miss South Carolina title this year recieves a $60,000 scholarship.
-Besides your personal platform, “Hope for the Arts,” what other community service opportunities has the Miss SC Organization given you?
A: The national platform for the Miss America/Miss SC Organization is Children’s Miracle Network. I have had many opportunities to volunteer for fundraisers to raise money. I have visited McLeod Children’s hospital and had the privilege of meeting these brave children. To visit and pray with these children and their families really put it all into perspective for me . I left determined to help this cause as much as possible alongside so many selfless people who I have met through partnering with this organization. I would love for Myrtle Beach to be the biggest miracle makers this year through the SC Scholarship organization.
-Why do you feel you are a good representative of the Myrtle Beach area?
A: I was born and raised right here in Myrtle Beach. To be able to represent my hometown means so much to me. I have been involved in our community and have grown to love the things that make our city so unique. From our local small businesses to the beautiful beaches we have, to just the overall spirit of community, I am excited to be able to shine a Iight on my hometown to show everyone following my journey just how amazing this place is.
