FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The Miracle League of Florence County hopes talks with area leaders Thursday will progress an effort to build a rubberized-surface baseball field and playground in the Pee Dee.
Miracle League of Florence County President Kevin Elliott requested help to fund and find a location for the project at a 9 a.m. Florence County Council meeting. The league is non-traditional baseball for players with disabilities and special needs.
“we got some positive feedback and a few of the councilmen spoke up and said that they would like for all of them to come together to help make this field happen,” Elliott told News13 after the meeting. “it would be good for the community.”
The Miracle League of Florence County will start its fourth season in April and has grown to more than 100 participants. Elliott said the league is holding its games at four Florence-area ball fields, but added playing in the dirt and clay make it hard to use wheelchairs and other assistance.
Ideally, the group said it would like to build the facility near the Greenwood Ball Field off of Pamplico Highway. Elliott said the organization has toured several facilities similar to the one they want built in Florence. The effort could cost anywhere from $700,000 to $1 million to build.
The organization has raised approximately $42,000 in the past 18 months. Elliott says much of that money has come from fundraisers, t-shirt sales, oyster roasts and golf tournaments.
