COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s Unclaimed Property Program now sits at $462 million.
The money comes from things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks and forgotten utility deposits. Some accounts date as far back as the 1940s.
The S.C. Treasurer’s Office says last year, more than $16 million was paid out to South Carolina individuals and businesses.
As of today, there are still more than a million accounts waiting to be claimed.
To help get the word out, the state legislature will proclaim February 18th as Unclaimed Property Day. Palmetto Payback staff will be in the lobby of the State House in Columbia Wednesday from 9:30am to 3pm to help you search in the database.
