Mecklenburg County begins enforcing smoking ban at parks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities are going to start enforcing a smoking ban in most Mecklenburg County parks and greenways.

The ban was passed six months ago, and signs have been put up. Enforcement begins Wednesday, with a $25 fine possible for violators.

The ban also includes electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco and covers the grounds of all government buildings, including those run by Charlotte and the other six municipalities in Mecklenburg County.

The only exceptions are 18 larger, regional parks and the six golf courses run by the county.
