LITTLE RIVER SC, – It is flu season, and many of us have already taken the opportunity to get the flu vaccination this year. To protect patients and staff, McLeod Loris Seacoast elects to offer the flu vaccine to all staff members at no cost.
Influenza, or “flu”, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It spreads between people causing severe illnesses which can lead to death. Statistics prove that 5% – 20% of the U.S. population will get the flu this year. Dr. Jose Hernandez, Primary Care Physician with Loris Family Health Center stated, “The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Now is the time of year to get your flu vaccine.”
How do you know if you have the flu? Symptoms of the flu can include: 100°F or higher or feeling feverish (not everyone has fever, cough or sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches/body aches, chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Medical attention should not be taken lightly when you have any of the following: difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, purple or blue discoloration of the lips, pain or pressure in chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, persistent vomiting, seizures, symptoms that improve, and return.
Protecting yourself and the community is critical during this time of year. To avoid spreading the virus, wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. Germs also spread by touching eyes, nose, and mouth, so avoiding those areas are important. Remember to always cover your nose and mouth with tissue when you cough or sneeze, and stay home for 24 hours after fever is gone without use of medicine.
