FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – McLeod Children’s Hospital hosted its second annual asthma camp on Saturday afternoon. The educational event was open to kids ages 5 through 11 who have the respiratory condition.
“The goal of our camp today is to have our kids in our area that have asthma come and learn, not only what asthma is, but also how to control it,“ explained respiratory therapist Ann Bochette.
The campers spent the afternoon participating in interactive and educational games and activities that taught them everything from asthma control during sports to how to properly breathe through their inhalers. It’s vital that they inhale and hold it for ten seconds which “gives the medication time to really fall down the lungs good and get to the small airways before they blow out,” according to Bochette.
Parents also got the chance to learn about asthma, its symptoms, trigger avoidance, and proper medication administration.
The camp was sponsored by the McLeod Health Foundation and hosted by respiratory therapists, registered nurses, and certified asthma educators.
