Dr. Walsh specializes in hip and knee replacements. So during News13 NOW He spoke a little about a new approach to hip replacements that may be a better option for some patients.
A posterior approach is the current standard for most hip replacements, but some patients may benefit from a direct anterior approach with an incision through the front of the hip. When performing the direct anterior approach, the hip muscles are pushed to the side to access the hip. During the posterior approach, muscles are detached in order to get down to the hip joint itself.
With the direct anterior hip replacement, there is less muscle detachment or splitting, which allows for a quicker recovery and return back to the patient’s normal functional status. There’s also a lot less pain and less blood loss compared to the posterior or lateral approach. Research has also shown that the direct anterior hip replacement, results in increased joint stability and fewer instances of dislocation throughout the life of the prosthetic.
