MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach police have arrested one man who was later charged with cruelty to children and domestic violence.

Early Wednesday morning, officers responded to the Super 8 Motel on US Highway 17 in reference to a domestic violence call.

Incident reports from Myrtle Beach Police say officers arrived and spoke with a front desk clerk who told police which direction the subjects were traveling on foot. Reports say the victim and the suspect were spotted near the McDonald’s where they were stopped and interviewed by officers.

The victim told police the man approached her while she was talking on the phone and strangled her from behind. The victim says the suspect then went back into the hotel lobby to get their children and strangled her a second time and chased her down the street until police arrived.

Reports say 24-year-old  Michael Rees was taken into custody and charged with domestic violence second degree for strangling the woman, and also cruelty to children for “taking his barefoot children down the road in windy, sub 50 degree weather”.

Witnesses reported hearing loud noises coming from the subject’s motel room and reports say witnesses also pleaded with the suspect to let the children stay in the lobby while the victim and the suspect argued outside in the parking lot.
