MULLINS, S.C. (WBTW) – More than 75 volunteers gathered Thursday at the Little Pee Dee Association in Mullins to help evacuees in the City of Nichols.
The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort based in Nashville, Tennessee provided an 18-wheeler full of things like: clothes, water, cleaning items and food. School buses were provided to bring people from the Palmetto Middle School shelter to get the items.
Eboni Johnson, Coordinator of the Disaster Relief Effort in Mullins said, “All of this is to serve the needs of those in need and to bring glory to God. Many people have been praying and I am hoping and praying that this is an answer to their prayers.”
“It is just devastating when you lose a bed and you lose a home. You lose all of your items. Even in Marion we are still without power. But we are able to come home to a bed. It just really touches the hearts of those who know the needs. It was the least that we can do and it came together so wonderfully it can only be the work of God,” Johnson adds.
State Senator Kent Williams was instrumental in helping the event come together in just one day. Senator Williams said this event is a result of people throughout Marion County coming together to help the people displaced in Nichols.
Senator Williams explained, “What you’re seeing here is the love and compassion that the people have for one another. How when disaster hits how we can come together on one accord to help our brother [and sisters].”
“From the thousand year flood we had some damage but it was very minuscule. Hurricane Matthew it has taken a toll on the entire County. People are hurting…People are in need…People have lost everything..That is where we are,” Senator Williams concludes.
Volunteers plan to ask for another truck from the Churches of Christ– to make sure each person impacted by the flooding in Nichols have supplies.
