Hundreds of people took advantage of Saturday’s nice weather for a walk to help raise money for premature babies, as the

March of Dimes held its “March for Babies” at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Stadium.

Organizers say more than 800 walkers raised money and awareness to save children born prematurely.

The Beattie family of Horry County led the march, and know first hand the importance of the March of Dimes.

Their son Lucas was born premature at 29 weeks and the family was helped by the organization, “We were in the neonatal intensive care unit for 61 days of our life, not able to take our child home.  They have spent so much money researching trying to help other babies, and it’s just been a blessing to our lives,” says Lucas’ mother.

Researchers don’t know why some babies are born early but those who walked Saturday wanted to raise money to help with the research.

Each week around 150 babies are born too early in South Carolina.
