Man leads Florence police on chase after avoiding checkpoint

FLORENCE (WBTW) –  The Florence County Sheriff’s Office have a man in custody after deputies say he lead police on a chase in Florence.

Maj. Mike Nunn with the Florence County Sherriff’s Office says Orlando Carter, 28, of Florence was arrested by deputies Friday night for failing to stop for a blue light and driving under suspension.

According to deputies, the 12th Circut Law Enforcement Network was implementing a Traffic Safety Checkpoint on Freedom Blvd around 9:20 p.m., when police say Carter turned erratically to avoid the checkpoint, nearly missing a deputy.  Deputies say that Carter then lead police on a chase that ended on South Irby St. when Carter got out of the car and ran into a wooded area.  Florence County sent out a canine tracking and Raptor One with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit who were able to find him shortly after.

Carter remains at the Florence County Detention Center on a $15,000.00 surety bond.
