FLORENCE (WBTW) – The Florence County Sheriff’s Office say they have a man in custody after he held 10 kids hostage Sunday afternoon in a mobile home.
According to Maj. Michael Nunn with the Florence County Sherriff’s Office, Dwayne Muldrow, 46, of Effingham was arrested and charged with 1st degree Burglary, DUI and Kidnapping shortly after 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Kenny Boone, deputies responded to a call about a crash off Savannah Grove Rd in Florence.
Boone says, a witness immediately called and said the driver drove off, got out of the car, and went back to the car to get a gun. Boone says they are trying to confirm if the man had a gun.
“Everybody came and police were pulling their guns out and it got crazy real quick,” mentioned Ashley Washington who lives on T and W Lane.
Deputies say after the man crashed he then walked to a mobile home down T and W Lane where 10 kids were playing inside.
People who live on T and W Lane in Florence County say Sunday started out as any normal day until they were left in the dark.
“Our power went out so I was just outside to see what’s going on,” said Washington.
Washington says while things turned scary in a short amount of time she is relieved that everyone who lives there is safe.
“But once the door was open it was like all the kids came running out. It was a line of cop cars so nothing was going to happen to the kids but I guess they were so scared because they didn’t know what was going on either at the same time, so all of them just ran out, all of them were crying. It was sad, very sad,” added Washington.
Boone says the SWAT team, deputies and a negotiator arrived and quickly talked the man into letting the children go.
One of the children escaped the home and when Muldrow ran outside after the child, he was taken into custody by deputies.
“I was nervous. It had me a little shaken up because I have nieces and nephews over here as well,” said Washington.
Deputies say no one was injured during the incident.
The incident remains under investigation and Muldrow could face additional charges.
