DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – A Pennsylvania man was killed in Darlington County Friday afternoon while attempting to get his luggage out of the roadway, according to the Darlington County Coroner’s Office.
Coroner Todd Hardee says David Sippey, 49, of Pittsburgh, PA was traveling with his family through Darlington County on I-20 Friday afternoon when a piece of luggage situated on the top of their vehicle came off. Sippey pulled his vehicle to the side of the road and went out into the roadway to get the suitcase.
Sippey was struck and killed by a passing motorist. This incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the eastbound lane near the 137 mile marker.
The Darlington County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating this incident.
