A man died near Aynor on Monday afternoon after some sort of incident with a backhoe, officials say.
Horry County Fire Rescue was called to Garner Road off SC 319 around 5 pm on Monday.
There, rescue crews found a 58-year-old man who was dead “on (the) ground behind a parked backhoe at a farm,” said Deputy Horry County Coroner Tony Hendrick.
On Monday, Hendrick was unsure if Ray Allen Bartley, age 58 from Fairmont NC died from a medical problem or from an accident involving the backhoe.
After an autopsy was performed Tuesday morning, Hendrick said Bartley died “from crushing chest trauma.”
But, Hendrick said that at this point he wasn’t exactly sure how the incident happened.
“The mechanism of injury remains under investigation,” Hendrick said.
