HORSE SHOE, NC (WNCN) — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death after a man who recently moved to North Carolina was found unresponsive at the site of “Transformus” over the weekend.

The victim was found in a stream on Watagnee Trail in Horse Shoe around 2 p.m. Sunday according to Henderson County Sheriff’s Office investigators. The Transformus website reports the victim was a man.CLICK HERE for more photos

He was taken to Park Ridge Hospital in Hendersonville where he later died.  The Asheville Citizen-Times said the man who died was Jay Houston Marx, 35, who had recently been living in Tryon, NC, but was from Annapolis, Maryland.The

The Transformus website says the event is a unique outdoor camping experience that is held on Deerfields.

The website also described Transformus as “a Burning Man sanctioned regional Burn experience dedicated to the principles of inclusion, gifting, decommodification, self-reliance, self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy.”

The Transformus group released the following statement:

On Sunday afternoon, a tragic accident occurred during Transformus. A participant was discovered unresponsive underwater at the lake. The emergency services staff on site promptly responded to provide aid. The man was then transported off the event site by ambulance emergency workers and taken to Park Ridge Hospital. We now have confirmation that while he was at the hospital he did pass away. We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities involved. This is a terrible loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Transformus community.
