FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say they have charged a 36-year-old man with murder in the shooting death of a victim found dead in a car trunk in Fayetteville.

Investigators told local media outlets that John Sierra is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of 25-year-old Samuel Federick III.

Authorities say Federick’s mother heard Sierra might have had something to do in her son’s disappearance and called him. Police say Sierra told the woman that he and Federick were involved in a shootout.

Police found evidence of gunshots in Sierra’s home, then found Federick’s body in the trunk of a 2012 Dodge Avenger about 2 miles from Sierra’s home.

Sierra remains at the Cumberland County jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
