A man has been charged after a Dillon woman fell off a moving car on New Year’s Day.
According to a press release from the Dillon Police Department, Phillip Turner has been arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter in the case.
Around 7 p.m. on January 1, the DPD responded to 911 calls about a person being on the hood of a vehicle driving south on Highway 301 through city limits, says the release. “Within minutes, law enforcement responded to another 911 call in reference to an unresponsive person lying in the roadway at the intersection of South 10th Avenue and East Calhoun Street.”
The unresponsive person passed away due to “injuries received during this event.”
An investigation into this incident led to Turner’s arrest and charge.
The City of Mullins and the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley identified the woman who died as June Rippy, 54, of Dillon. He said Rippy’s death is being treated as suspicious.
