SAN JOSE, CA – A North Carolina teenager came close to earning one of five coveted spots on the US Women’s Gymnastics team.
Ashton Locklear will now be headed to the 2016 Olympic competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as one of three replacement athletes.
Locklear, 18, was born in Lumberton. She now calls Hamlet, N.C. home.
She trains at Everest Gymnastics in Huntersville.
Fourteen competitors faced off at Sunday’s U.S. Olympic trial in San Jose, CA.
Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian were named by the selection committee to represent Team USA at next month’s Olympic Games in Rio.
Ashton Locklear, Ragan Smith and MyKayla Skinner will serve as the three replacement athletes for Team USA.
