Lumberton bridge dedicated to slain police officer

LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – A Lumberton police officer killed three years ago was honored Thursday night.

Officer Jeremiah Goodson was off duty when he was shot to death in 2012.

Hundreds of people gathered to honor his life with a bridge naming ceremony.

The new bridge crosses I-95 and Exit 22, and it will be named after Officer Goodson.

Officers from across the state were there to honor him, and Fayetteville Police Department Detective Stig Larson says it’s because they wanted to show their appreciation of Goodson’s service and sacrifice.

“They know what it means to put on that uniform every day, and when they drive down interstate 95 or 301 going through this area and they see that name, they’ll remember the sacrifice he gave to fight against the evil that’s in this world,” said Larson.

The bridge was chosen because it is close to the convenience store where Goodson was killed.
