MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Kevin Cox joined News13 Now at 9 a.m. on Friday to talk about his quest to win the Men’s Health Ultimate Guy contest. Cox is from Conway, and he is currently in 10th place of more than 600 contestants.

The ultimate prize in the Ultimate Guy contest is being on the cover of Men’s Health magazine. Watch the video to learn more about what the contest is all about and how you can vote to give Cox your support.

The following is an outline of the Q&A during the show:

  • Q: Tell us about the Men’s Health Ultimate Guy Contest.
  • A: The contest is for the readers of Men’s Health Magazine to get a chance to appear on the cover of the November issue. Contestants fill out an online application, upload pictures, and ask people to vote online through social media. The online voting ends Sunday June 19th at midnight. You can vote once per day from a different internet connection (WiFi, cellular, hotspots). On June 20th the judges will cut the list of contestants to 100 people and start interviews. As time progresses they will cut the final list to 5 contestants that will travel to New York for a photo shoot and appear in the November magazine with one of them appearing on the cover.
  • Q: What do the judges consider the “Ultimate Guy”?
  • A: Obviously it’s about being physically fit, but you don’t have to be the strongest or fastest guy, you just have to be in great shape. They are ultimately looking for a guy that is well rounded. Physical fitness, active in their community, charitable, and anything that makes you stand out from the crowd.
  • Q: Why did you enter the contest?
  • A:  I’ve been a subscriber to the magazine since I was 17. I enjoy the information that you can find in the magazine, not about being a male, but about being a responsible man. I first entered the contest because I like the magazine and I thought it would be great to grace the cover, but I know that I need to do more. This is an opportunity to be a leader, and a role model. I have a platform to which I can explain and show people how important it is to give back to your community. Being a gentleman is about taking care of yourself and others. We all have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, we just have to act upon that opportunity. This is my opportunity. Individually I can influence a small amount of people within our area. As this contest continues and as more people become aware of the contest and who I am, then I can make a difference in those lives as well. I can influence people, that will influence others, and with that exponential growth, we can make our world a great place for everyone.
  • Q: Do you have advice for others so that they can be their “Ultimate Self” also?
  • A:

    • a) Make fitness a priority
    • b) Healthy diet
    • c) Sleep
    • d) Support System
  • Q:  Why should people vote for you?
  • A:  John Maxwell said that if you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go as a group. It takes a community to accomplish a large task, you can’t do it alone. The reason that I’m #10 in a field of 600 is because of my family, my friends, and their friends. This community has given me the opportunity to go for one of my goals, so it’s my job to make sure that I’m doing all that I can to give back to that community. That can be fundraising, to raising awareness for a non-profit, talking about the importance of fitness, or even just making people aware of the strength of our community’s spirit. Our area is full of amazing people with great hearts.
  • Q:  How do the viewers vote for you?
  • A:  It’s very simple. Go to http://ultimateguy.menshealth.com/ and click on the “Leaderboard” where you should find me, contestant #99, around 10th place.  Click my picture and then click vote.
