A Girl Scout troop in the Grand Strand is raising money to send hundreds of boxes of cookies to servicemen overseas. 

Troop 91 in North Myrtle Beach hopes to send at least 600 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to every Marine and Naval soldier aboard the USS New York, with a message written by each of the troop members.

On Sunday, the girls cold cookies at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10804 in Little River. The troop has teamed up with the veterans group for the fundraiser since one of the members has a husband stationed in the Mediterranean, on the USS New York.

The Girl Scouts have raised enough money for approximately 450 boxes. They hope to ship the cookies off in a couple of weeks.

“Sending girl scout cookies is kind of like apple pie-  homemade, they’re all American,” said VFW Auxiliary State Youth Chairman Cathey Farley. “And so we really think it’s going to bring smiles to their faces and remind them of home, and how much people at home are thinking of them.”
