MURRELS INLET, SC (WBTW) – Hundreds of local bikers gathered to give back to their community on Sunday. It was for their annual Christmas Toy Run.
You couldn’t miss them if you drove by the Inlet Square Mall parking lot Sunday morning – hundreds of bikes revved up and ready to ride, for a good cause. The local nonprofit, “Under the Wings of an Angel” organized the toy drive. This was the 5th year they collected toys for needy children in Horry County, with the help of almost a dozen local biker groups. Michelle Hambrick is a member of “Under the Wings”. She says it was especially important for them to hold the Toy Run this year because of Hurricane Matthew.
“These children, they did lose all their toys, they did lose clothing. The kids that wouldn’t have had to use a program like ours, this year they have to. Parents have just spent money trying to get the wall put back up and keep the roof over their head.”
“Under the Wings” coordinator Steve Clark, who’s also an ordained minister, says he and his fellow bikers started the toy run simply because they wanted to serve their community.
“My wife’s a school teacher in Myrtle Beach city schools, so I hear a lot of the stories about people living in cars, people living in homeless shelters. I know that there’s a need and we try to meet that need.”
Under the Wings of an Angel is also taking part in a canned and non-perishable food drive next weekend. It’s scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd, from 7 PM to 12 AM at Island Bar and Grill.
