FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) – Lighthouse Ministries of Florence used a Seventy- Five thousand dollar grant from the Children’s Trust of South Carolina to launch the ‘Strengthening Families Program’.
The program is a fourteen week program used to coach parents and children on communication practices. Each week the families practice what they learn after meeting with a program coach.
Floria Porter the Lighthouse Ministries site coordinator said, “If I was to some it all up in one word it would be resiliency. Giving parents and the children the skills they need to be resilient. To be able to encounter difficult situations but be able to bounce back from them.”
Porter said it was important to bring the ‘Strengthening Families Program’ to Florence because it provides evidence based communication and stress tactics.
“We wanted to bring something to not only answer the immediate need or the emergent need, which is what we deal with, but to help with giving them something to look forward to,” Porter explained.
Nine families are currently in the program. Another group of up to fourteen families will begin the program in January.
