An agreement to sell land and property currently occupied by Horry County Fire Rescue to a local college will move forward.
The Horry County Public Safety Committee recommended the ordinance move to full council for consideration during its Monday morning meeting in Conway.
The county received an unsolicited request to sell 2.62 acres of real property along Victory Lane that is currently occupied by Horry County Fire Rescue Station 23. The request would help Horry-Georgetown Technical College grow its Conway campus.
According to a decision paper, multiple appraisals valued the land and property at $350,000. However, Horry County leaders say the cost of property acquisition and construction will substantially exceed that amount.
The proposed agreement would give Horry County three years to relocate and rebuild Station 23. Horry County Councilman Al Allen calls that “ample time” to develop plans and purchase land within Station 23’s current coverage zone.
Horry County Fire Rescue says so far, it has been unable to find property within that coverage zone to build a new fire station. Leaders said Monday they continue to look for land along SC-544 and Singleton Ridge Road for the project.
Horry County Council will likely begin discussions on the ordinance in June or July.
