Law enforcement prepares for bike fest and Memorial Day weekend

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) -Friday is the first day of this year’s Atlantic beach Memorial Day bike fest. People all over the Grand Strand, the state and even law enforcement from the Department of Justice are coming to make sure it’ll be the safest weekend possible.

News13 spoke with several officers and highway patrol and they say they’re going to enforce South Carolina laws here in Atlantic beach and all over Horry county just like they do every day.

The only difference is that there is going to be more officers on the coast this weekend but Corporal Sonny Collins says the principles stay the same.

“It all boils down to the things we look for every weekend. It’s going to be the speeding, the DUIs, in the cars not wearing seatbelts, so the things we always talk about, distractions, being on the phone, the things we always talk about, they just get amplified this weekend because you have so many people in town, one mistake can have a catastrophic effect.”

Corporal Collins says they do have to keep a close eye on people driving under the influence just because with a crowd this size, there is bound to be drunk drivers on the road. There will be troopers set up at posts all around town to help with traffic as well as look out for those who are breaking the law.
