The trial for a former Lamar police chief accused of stealing pills and altering reports ended on Wednesday with an “alternative resolution.”

The Darlington County Clerk’s Office confirmed the trial for Jason Chaney started on Wednesday, but was resolved before the trial ended.

Robert Kittle, with the Attorney General’s Office, said “considering all the evidence and testimony up to that point in trial, the State and defense settled on a fair resolution. It was not a guilty plea, but an alternative resolution.”

Kittle confirmed Chaney would not be serving any time in prison, but could not release the terms of the resolution.

Chaney was charged with filing a false police report, two counts of misconduct in office, and two count of theft of a controlled substance.

A SLED affidavit from August 2017 said Chaney took two bottles of controlled substances from the police department and altered a police report to hide the theft.
