CONWAY (WBTW) – A volunteer at Kingston Nursing Center earned statewide recognition for his devotion to the patients he cares for in the memory of his late wife.

Jim Lanoo, who for more than four years has volunteered at the nursing home at Conway Medical Center, was named Leading Age South Carolina’s Volunteer of the Year during a ceremony Thursday morning at the center.  Lanoo began volunteering at Kingston and soon earned his certification as a nurse’s assistant following his wife’s death.

Representatives from Leading Age read aloud some testimonials from patients and co-workers of Lanoo’s that they’d received, and the full dining room gave him a standing ovation.

“All the volunteers here–not just me–all the volunteers here who do the same things I received that award for, this is for them,” said Lanoo.

He also recently became a part of the pastoral care staff at Kingston so he can help with those patients who may be near the end of their lives.

“He just brings a lot of life and laughter,” said Administrator Laura Fowler. “He has a wonderful sense of humor and is able to connect with (patients) on a different level than some of us who work here every day.”
