MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach police report a juvenile has been identified and taken into custody after a reported armed robbery early Friday morning.
Police say a robber pulled a gun on a Myrtle Beach Scotchman convenience store clerk and smiled when he pulled the trigger and the gun did not fire.
An incident report from Myrtle Beach Police states the 35-year-old clerk was arranging tobacco products behind the front counter when the would-be robber entered the store, located at 6201 N Kings Hwy, just before 1 a.m. Friday morning.
The clerk told police that the suspect, believed to be around 14-years-old, walked toward the counter and pointed a handgun at the employee. The clerk warned the gunman, “don’t be stupid,” but the robbery suspect pulled the trigger anyway. The gun “clicked,” but did not fire, the report details.
The suspect then pulled a 9″ kitchen knife on the clerk. The employee told the knife-wielding robber that he wouldn’t get any more than $20 out of the register, causing the armed criminal to run out of the store empty-handed.
The suspect was described by police as a young, white male, estimated to be 14-year-old, standing approximately 5′ 8″ and weighing 120 pounds. Police report the suspect has medium length brown hair, brushed to the side in the front and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black jogger pants and purple cleaning gloves.
Lt. Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach Police says a suspect has been taken into custody and “the suspect is a juvenile, therefore we will not be releasing his name at this time.”
The victim told police that he recognized the gunman from coming into the store on different occasions, but did not know his name.
