CONWAY, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina judge has refused to reconsider a 10-year prison sentence for a woman who killed her husband, but argued self-defense.
Circuit Judge Cordell Maddox Jr. said Tuesday that he considered Heather Sims’ request for six months because of the impact 10 years behind bars would have on Sims’ child.
But Maddox says he could see no legal reason to overturn the 25-year sentence, which is suspended to serving 10 years in jail as long as Sims successfully finishes five years of probation.
Sims says her 35-year-old husband attacked her with a knife at their Conway home in August 2013 before she shot him. Prosecutors say the knife wounds were self-inflicted.
Sims was charged with murder, but a jury found her guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
