CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County has a new director of the J Reuben Long Detention Center.

Sheriff Phillip Thompson is pleased to announce the selection of the Director of Detention at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center to fill the vacancy of former Director Tom Fox who was promoted to Chief Deputy in January.
After a thoughtful search for a replacement, Sheriff Thompson selected Captain Wayne Owens of the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Owens began his law enforcement career in 1994 at the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. He has served for approximately (22) twenty two years under Sheriff A. Lane Cribb, and currently served as Captain of Operations.
Mr. Owens graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, session 249, and is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, class 302. He has attended numerous other law enforcement training classes and programs.
Director Owens’s first day with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office is April 18, 2016. Sheriff Thompson stated, “Wayne is highly skilled law enforcement administrator that will be a great addition to our leadership team and we are looking forward to him guiding the men and women who operate the detention center”.
