CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Police Department has a new interim police chief Monday.

Horry County Councilman Johnny Vaught said Interim Chief Mark Waites turned in his notice to leave the department this morning.

Vaught says in order to be chief for HCPD, you have to live in Horry County. Waites lives in Georgetown County and will leave the department for a job as Police Chief in Georgetown.

In a press release from Horry County, Waites last day of employment will be July 1. Waites was named Interim Chief after Saundra Rhodes retired in May.

“Waites spent most of his career working for the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Georgetown before coming to Horry County,” state Chris Eldridge, Horry County Administrator.  “Georgetown is home to him and as such, his wife, Chelice, is currently running for Georgetown County Treasurer. I wish him and his family a successful future, and I appreciate his professionalism and dedication to the police department.”

Lance Winburn will act as Interim Chief until a permanent chief is hired, the release stated.
