RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) – A second prisoner in less than a month has been killed by his cellmate at a maximum security South Carolina prison.
The Corrections Department said in a news release that 24-year-old Ryan Mansfield was killed early Thursday morning in his cell at Lieber Correctional Institution near Ridgeville.
Prison officials didn’t say how Mansfield was killed.
Prison records show Mansfield was serving a five-year sentence for burglary and grand larceny from Richland County. He was set to be released in March.
Authorities say Mansfield was killed by 34-year-old Michael Brice. The investigation continues and no charges have been filed.
Brice started a 13-year sentence for drug and weapons charges from York County in January.
A prisoner was also killed by a cellmate at Lee Correctional Institution on June 22.
