FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – A new paving project in Florence County is in the works. The Irby Street project is the first of several scheduled to take place from now through till 2017 in the Pee Dee.
DOT officials say construction on South Irby Street between Second Loop Road and Palmetto Street is where motorists driving at night will start to see activity as crews work to improve the area
Assistant Construction Engineer Jamie Poston says the purpose of the project is to bring sidewalks up to par at intersections and to help a drainage problem.
Though work along Irby Street has already started, Poston says the hours crews will work is during less traffic times so that way it will make it much easier and safer for crews to work.
When the project is complete all four lanes from Irby Street to Second Loop Road will be repaved.
Residents who travel and work along where the construction is happening says the improvements are needed but their concerns are how much longer it will take for crews to finish.
“You know early in the morning, afternoon traffic…lunch traffic really, that’s the worse time, then you have your five thirty traffic, those are the worse times of the day. But other than that they’re doing a great job doing one side at a time. I wish the process would take a little quicker though,” said Demetrius Ferguson.According to Poston, these developments are expected to cost around $9.4 million.
Paving will happen between 7 p.m. at night and 6 a.m. in the morning. The goal is to have the entire project finished by June 1st.
