MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Police are investigating a murder after a woman’s body was found in the Maytag Laundromat on Socastee Boulevard.

Police say the store owner found the body around 8am Friday morning, the coroner’s office identified the woman as 65-year-old Wanda Wohnig from the Myrtle Beach area.

Police arrested Jon Paul Joseph Marston for armed robbery, murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.  Marston is from Myrtle Beach.

News13 spoke to people who work in Socastee Plaza and businesses owners said the murder investigation next door has them rethinking their security measures.

“The first thing the police asked was can we see your surveillance? We have an alarm but no surveillance,” said Damian Debarber, who works at a barbershop nearby.

Debarber said he’s concerned for the shop’s owner Robyn Wilson, “she’s here sometimes by herself. Now I know I can’t leave her here.”

It’s a concern Wilson shares and has her thinking she’ll upgrade her security in the future.

“I have security and they asked me when they set up the system if I wanted any cameras and I denied the cameras but I am going to get the cameras now,” said Wilson.

Police talked to multiple businesses nearby about surveillance cameras.

“One police officer did come in there and asked us if we had cameras we only have cameras inside not outside,” said Jesse Canada, who also works nearby.

Beyond safety concerns, Debarber and Wilson are also worried about the impact on businesses in the plaza.

“This plaza’s been closed for a long time, businesses are just opening up,” said Wilson.

Wilson’s barbershop has been open for only four months, “I just started this business and its terrible because its going to make people afraid to come in this plaza,” said Wilson.

The barbershop relies on traffic driving by to get new business.

“And at the end of the day, it hurts us because as you can see no one was in here period, and they’re not going to come. It’s Friday, normally a busy day,” said Debarber.

Debarber worries that will impact his job moving forward.

“You got to think, as you are coming past here and see this, would you stop and come? You haven’t been coming here, so why start now?” asked Debarber.

But despite any concerns, Wilson’s thoughts go out to those involved, “I just pray for the family,” she said.
