SANTEE, S.C. (AP) – Interstate 95 will be periodically shut down at night as construction crews place girders for a new bridge over the highway just south of Lake Marion in Orangeburg County.
The Department of Transportation said work will begin Monday night on the northbound side. Both lanes will need to be closed for about 15 minutes each time one of the 11 girders is placed.
Authorities say the girders weigh 80,000 pounds each and it would be too dangerous to let traffic pass under them as they are put in place.
DOT says work over northbound I-95 will take place Monday and Tuesday, with 11 more girders placed over the southbound side Wednesday and Thursday. The opposite lanes will not be affected.
Crews are building a new bridge at Exit 97.
