Hurricane Matthew make-up days announced for Horry County Schools

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Board of Education announced three make-up days Monday evening.

As a result of Hurricane Matthew, students missed seven instructional days. Students in the Green Sea-Floyds attendance area missed eight, according to district officials.

Three make-up days will occur on:

• November 23
• January 2
• January 13

State law requires districts in South Carolina must make up the first three days of school missed from inclement weather. Horry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rick Maxey says after those three days are made up, local school boards can waive the next three days. That, however, can only happen with a majority vote.

Should a district miss six to nine days of instruction, Maxey says districts have the opportunity to petition the state board of education to waive the additional make-up days.

An Horry County Schools spokeswoman told News13 a decision on the remaining make-up days will happen after January 13.
