MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – With the holidays just around the corner, many food pantries in the area work to restock after Hurricane Matthew.
Chuck Kelly volunteers at Helping Hand food banks around the Grand Strand, and he says since Matthew, he’s seen a common theme.
“People have lost everything. I mean really, they’re starting from scratch,” said Kelly.
The devastation left behind built an even greater need, keeping food banks busy.
“You know, our shelves were almost empty last week. This week, we’re starting to fill them back up again and in perfect time for the holidays.
Helping Hand Executive Director Tina Shuppy says they feed more than 100 people per day and they need things like soup, canned vegetables, and cereal.
“You’re supposed to be happy over the holidays. There’s a lot of people who are struggling and stressing over how they’re going to feed their children, much less how are they providing a Christmas for them. They are worried about how they’re going to feed them,” said Shuppy.
