MURRELLS INLET, SC (WBTW) – A Murrells Inlet man says he and another customer were overcharged on his gas bill and warns other customers to go over their bills carefully.

When Eric Gray went to pay his bill to Suburban Propane last week, the $3.79 price per gallon jumped out at him.

He called the local dealer, “and she indicated that was a mistake in the billing, they have no control over that and she’d adjust my bill to $2.29 a gallon.”

Three days later he learned a woman in Murrells was charged $4.89 a gallon by Suburban Propane, at a time when the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration average price across the nation showed $2.03.

“They were so kind and generous to lower theirs to the $2.29 also,” said Gray.

Gray says if he hadn’t caught the billing mistake, the two would have paid $403.90 extra.  He worries others aren’t being so careful.

“How many people are not looking at their bill and paying it? And my goodness that’s a house payment for some people,” said Gray.

News13 reached out to the Better Business Bureau who said 160 billing complaints have been filed against Suburban Propane nationwide in the last three years, 4 in South Carolina.

“I would suggest those out there to look hard and ask your neighbors what theirs are,” advised Gray.

Gray says the experience has him looking for a new propane supplier, “I was quoted from another one $2.05 a gallon, and I think with this at $2.29 a gallon, certainly they’re doing me a favor by lowering it from where it was at; but there’s cheaper gas out there.”

News13 reached out to Suburban Propane multiple times Monday.  The company has yet to comment.
