How long does food stay good during power outage?

If Winter Storm 2016 leads to a power outage at your home, how long will your food stay fresh in your refrigerator and freezer?

The key is to keep the doors closed for as long as possible, according to The Weather Channel. The refrigerator will keep food cold for four hours if it’s left unopened.

TWC reports a full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours if left unopened. A half-full freezer will maintain the temperature for 24 hours.

You should check before a power outage to see if your freezer temperature is set to zero degrees or colder. You should also ensure your refrigerator is at or below 40 degrees.

The Weather Channel reports food that was above 40 degrees for two hours or more should be thrown out.
