COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Gov. Nikki Haley and others who want more income tax relief along with more money for South Carolina roads are trying to figure out their next step after the House approved a bill they don’t like.
The House bill passed on a veto-proof 87-20 vote will raise more than $400 million extra yearly for roads by increasing taxes on fuel. It also cuts state income taxes by $51 million. That income tax relief is nowhere near the $1.8 billion in income tax cuts Haley called for in her State of the State address.
The roads debate now shifts to the Senate, which hasn’t agreed on any income tax cut.
Haley criticized the House vote on Facebook and plans to keep pressure on lawmakers through social media.
