COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The House’s budget-writing committee is meeting to decide how to spend hundreds of millions of dollars of additional revenue.
Monday’s meeting comes three days after the state’s economic advisory board recognized a total of $415 million in revenues above previous expectations. The total includes additional money that flowed into state coffers through April 30, as well as revised projections for the fiscal year starting July 1.
House Ways and Means Chairman Brian White introduced a skeleton, supplemental budget bill last week in anticipation of the board’s vote.
White says he wanted to handle the extra money in a separate bill.
Legislators don’t have full discretion on the total. Some most go toward education and tax relief. About $300 million of the additional revenue is spent through the state’s general fund.
