HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Ten South Carolina School Improvement Councils (SC-SICs) have been named to the 2016 Honor Roll for their significant efforts to foster civic engagement in public education. St. James High School is one among the 10 honorees and is the only SIC from Horry County Schools to make the Honor Roll this year.
From Florence Public School District One, South Florence High SIC is also listed to the 2016 Honor Roll. South Florence High is the only school from Florence County to be recognized among the 10 honorees.
Honor Roll SICs will continue in the running for SC-SIC’s annual Dick and Tunky Riley Award for School Improvement Council Excellence. Named for the former US Secretary of Education and South Carolina Governor and his late wife, the Riley Award was created in 2002 to recognize the vital contributions made by more than 1,100 local SICs and their 14,000 SIC members across the state.

- Bluffton Middle SIC, H.E. McCracken Middle SIC, and Port Royal Elementary SIC, all of Beaufort County School District;
- Denmark-Olar High SIC of Denmark-Olar School District Two of Bamberg County;
- Ebinport Elementary SIC of Rock Hill Schools – York County District Three;
- Jennie Moore Elementary SIC and Laing Middle School of Science and Technology, both of Charleston County School District;

Five finalists from this year’s list of Honor Roll SICs will be selected in February, with one to be announced as the winner of the annual Riley Award for SIC Excellence in late March.
School Improvement Councils were established in state law nearly 40 years ago. Part of the Center for Educational Partnerships within the University of South Carolina College of Education, the SC School Improvement Council provides the member training, technical assistance, statutory accountability, and other operational resources necessary for the continued success of the community-based SICs in each of the state’s K-12 public schools.
