CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County has started targeting properties with standing water as part of its “zika virus response plan.”

A county ordinance allows the county to punish property owners who refuse to clean up places where mosquitoes could breed. Those include containers holding water, old tires, trash, and neglected swimming pools.

The county’s stormwater department has sent out letters to two people with potential breeding places for mosquitoes, according to county spokesperson Lisa Bourcier, and they’ve gotten into compliance since then.

People who refuse to fix a “problem property” could be fined up to $500 or spend up to 30 days in jail for each violation of the law.
