MYRTLE BEACH, SC- Horry County United Way teamed up with several other organizations to offer free tax preparation. The service is available to people with low to moderate income, which means less than $53,000 a year.
Coordinator for Horry County United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program(VITA) Utocqua Grissett said about 75% of Horry County’s population falls within the low to moderate income range.
“I don’t know why people are stressed at tax season, just the fact of having to report to someone else I believe,” said Grissett.
She said the VITA program not only helps ease the stress, it saves tax payers money. VITA Volunteers work to help people get everything their owed without fees. All VITA volunteers are certified with the IRS.
“Typically on average a tax return will range between $200 to $400,” said Grissett.
Grissett said often times people qualify for exemptions and don’t realize it. She advises people who visit the VITA locations to bring the following documents and proof of identification….
– All W-2 and 1099 forms
– Information for all deductions credits
– Proof of account for direct deposit refund (voided check)
– Social security card or individual taxpayer identification card for you, your spouse, and dependents
– Proof of identification for you and your spouse
