CONWAY, SC-    Horry County Schools is looking to fill nearly 100 teaching positions during a district-wide recruitment fair called “Teach at the Beach” on February 21. The event will be held at Conway High School and starts at 9:30 a.m.

An organizer for the event said they want individuals who put students first, have a passion for teaching, are well-versed in technology and flexible when it comes to engaging students.

Coastal Carolina senior Tynesha James said she always knew she’d end up in education; however, she noticed something peculiar while interning at a few Horry County Schools.

“I saw the lack of minority teachers in schools and I thought hey we need more,” said James.

Human Resources Director for Horry County Schools Mary Anderson said the district is always looking to increase diversity amongst faculty.

“We like to think that we have someone in our schools teaching our children that would look like them,” said Anderson.

Horry County Schools currently has 42,632 students enrolled, 36% of those students are minorities.

“I think sometimes it helps the minority students if they have a minority teacher they can relate to them,” stated James.

Anderson agreed and said the district is actively pursuing them.

“We make sure that we attend all job fairs at the historically black colleges and universities,” she said.

In addition to minority applicants, Anderson told News 13 officials are looking to fill the district’s critical needs areas….

    – Secondary English, Math, Science

    – Middle School Math, Science

    – Special Education

    – Foreign Language – Spanish

    – Speech Language Pathologist

    – Guidance

    – Library Media

According to Anderson, over 120 applicants have pre-registered for the job fair and she expects at least 300 more walk-ins to show up. The event is divided into two segments. The morning session features an open fair where participants can mingle with staff from different schools. The afternoon, is reserved for scheduled interviews.
