CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – In April, News13 told you Horry County Schools need millions of dollars in repairs.
Executive Director of Facilities for Horry County Schools, Mark Wolfe, says after a busy summer of work, the district still needs $200 million in repairs.
News13 was there when former Whittemore Park Principal Judy Beard showed district leaders around the school with moisture issues, faulty air conditioning and ventilation, and classrooms too small for the number of students.
Horry County School Board member Janet Graham told us she saw the problems first-hand.
“I happened to go in one of the classrooms, and it was a beautiful, very warm day, maybe in the 80’s outside, and the heat was on and just going full blast. That was just, it’s unacceptable,” said Graham.
Quintina Livingston is the new principal at Whittemore Park Middle School and says there’s still a lot that needs to be done.
“Just when we had our open house, the hallways in certain parts, there’s no air conditioning in certain parts. Again, I want everybody to be comfortable and you know for security reasons, we keep our doors closed and locked and so then we don’t have an air flow,” said Livingston.
Wolfe says his crews worked all summer to install new units to help with the mildew problem.
“We’ve added some automation controls to that facility which helps us be able to see them remotely and monitor humidity levels, carbon dioxide levels and things like that,” said Wolfe.
Livingston says she’s been in constant communication with facilities since she started to make sure her students are safe.
“We walked every bit of this building and they showed me some things that were of concern and some things that were in the works, things that they were working on so that I would know,” said Livingston.
Wolfe says right now they are looking at a long-term plan for new schools, and they plan to look at needs in Conway but until that happens, school leaders have to work towards one goal.
“Whatever we can do to make sure that the facility is safe, inviting and that the kids and the teachers have an environment in which the teachers can deliver and the kids can receive the instruction,” said Livingston.
Wolfe says they hope to replace all of the A/C units at Whittemore Park Middle this school year, but in a district as big as Horry County, full renovations take time.
