CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County School Board met on Monday and announced they would not be paying for renovations to Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
The City of Myrtle Beach previously asked the school board for around $2 million to help with the nearly $5 million improvements.
“The stadium is still one of the best, probably the best stadium that we have in Horry County,” said Horry County School Board Chairman, Joe Defeo. “So putting money into that stadium to upgrade it would be unfair for the rest of the district.”
Defeo said the board believes the stadium is up to their educational standards and does not feel the need to pay for extra improvements.
Those improvements would include new bench seating, a new press box and tower equipped with an elevator, team rooms for players and officials, a new entrance, new turf and track, new restrooms and concessions area and one thousand extra seats on the visitor’s side.
The City of Myrtle Beach had planned to begin construction at the beginning of the new year and a search for a contractor has already started.
