MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Horry County’s year-round ban on large beach tents on the shore has been relaxed.
Local media outlets report that the county council on Tuesday agreed that the large canopy style tents with corner poles can be used for special events such as gatherings and weddings.
But those who use the tents will be required to get a county permit.
In addition, the changes allow small pop-up tents for small children. Beach umbrellas are still allowed, but they may not exceed 7 feet 6 inches in diameter.
The council last year had banned all large tents from the beach because of concerns there were so many that emergency vehicles could not drive along the shore.
Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach still ban all large beach tents between May and September.
